You can easily adjust the light output on the LS-4000 via Nikon software;
it's a technique I've used quite a lot. One of my Tope entries (Movement I
think) I double scanned to retrieve detail in a neg that had been over
exposed with flash.
As you simply scan twice its relatively simple to register one scan on top
of the other as a new layer.

The Min*lta scanners use a flourescent light. Letting the sensor have more
time to collect light would be the only way to increase the exposure. It
would seem that the intensity range of an LED would be more limited than
exposure time. Perhaps they can gain on signal to noise by varying the
brightness. I don't know what goes on inside the box though.
