Don't know about Nikon, I did have some Canons, some are plastic and some
are metal. The E-1 is mainly plastic but dust and water resistance, you can
hardly found any dust inside. The Canon are famous for dust inside the lens,
the 28-135 IS I had was having quite a lot, when I saw people selling them,
they always mentioned dust inside the lens (and don't worry it will not
affect picture quality :-)).
