Not my experience with the D100 at all. I have never been able to get
consistently attractive flash shots with any system until this camera
using both the built in flash and the SB800. I am a flash imbecile and
this camera works for me. The way it automatically balances the ambient
light with flash is a wonder.
As for contrast/dynamic range it has been measured here to be 7 EV
which is more than color reversal film:
http://www.bythom.com/dslrcomp.htm My experience is that this is
correct That is the same as any other 6MP camera. If you want more get
a Kodak SLR pro. . If you are blowing out highlights either your D100
is malfunctioning and you should get it repaired, or you haven't
learned how to use it. Why don't you get it checked out by Nikon. If it
is OK, take a course and learn how to use it. A new camera will not
improve the situation.
The automatic metering system is outstanding and much more consistent
than anything I have ever used except maybe for multi-spot metering in
the OM4 which is close in accuracy but much slower. Plus the camera has
both a histogram and a highlight blowout indicator so that you can
check your exposure on each shot. There is no excuse for blown
highlights. Even if your metering system is malfunctioning you can look
at the LCD and if there are any blown highlights they blink at you!
The D100 is set up like one of Nikon's professional cameras. The
exposure system is set up to protect the image at all costs and you
need to shoot raw images and use post processing to get the very best
out of it. Canon does the same thing. I don't know about the E-1. If
you want pretty jpegs straight out of the camera with little or no post
processing get either one of the entry DSLRs like a Nikon D70 or Canon
300D, or one of the new 8MP digicams and put up with the noise at high
ISO. The Fuji S2 Pro is very popular with people who hate post
processing with bright, colorful, sharp JPEGs. It also has the
advantage of having the lowest noise of any of them, although when it
does occur it is said to be more disturbing because of the diagonal
sensor array.
The transition to digital is not easy for anyone because for most
people the photographic process ends when they push the shutter
release. Many people do not like taking on the printing/display process
themselves. If your D100 is working the way it was designed, maybe you
should look into a service that will provide you with prints. They are
very competitive and there are some good ones out there.
