I used to sort my slides similarly. At the time, I had a lot of slides
taken in different countries so I sorted them out by country. It made
sense at the time but wasn't really an ideal system. The main drawback
was that I couldn't use the same system for negs because all my negs
were cut into strips of shots so there was no way to individually sort
the shots. The other problem was that any time I got new stuff back I'd
have to sort it the same way and that was a bit of a pain.
Now, I just sort everything by roll. It's pretty handy because there's
no special sorting needed when I get new stuff processed. Each shot is
individually indexed as roll number - frame number. For roll numbers, I
use a 4 digit base 36 (0-z) number that I continually count up from (I
have a few rolls that span over 1 year so resetting each year doesn't
work for me). Then I store other pertinent information in a database
(location, date, equipment details, etc). Unfortunately, I'm massively
behind on the input into the database.
On the digital side, all the files are stored in folders by roll and
named as roll number - frame number _ size of the long side in pixels.
So 0013-05_600.jpg is the 5th frame on roll 0013 and is 600 pixels on
it's long side. 000t-28_150.jpg is the 28th frame on roll 000t and is
150 pixels on it's long side.
The big drawback to this system is that if you don't remember what roll
a shot was on it's not as easy to find it. However, once I get the
database fully fired up and combined with scans of most/all of my stuff
then I can do all the searching on the computer and then it's extremely
easy to find a particular shot because I'll know exactly which sheet
and which frame I need.
The other potential for trouble I can see is that breaking it down by
rolls doesn't work as well for large format or digital where there
aren't really any "rolls". For large format, I suspect I'll break it
down by film holder (so 2 shots per "roll") and digital could by done
by memory card possibly. The thing is though, in those 2 cases the
break down by "roll" is pretty arbitrary. For sheet film, as long as I
can find the proper sheet it's fine and for digital it would just be
knowing which folder the files would be stored in so the system still
holds up.
