Well, that pic certainly brings back some memories. I think my brother
built his first tube radio at about 11. We later built Eico and Dynakit
Hi Fi kits. Then the local FM station that was first to start
broadcasting stereo sold the specialty parts, a list of the other parts
needed and instructions, and we built an FM stereo adapter before there
were any on the market. It worked too. Crap by later standards, but
truly amazing then. Later I spent a bit over 2 years selling and
servicing Heathkits. I can't imagine the number of Heathkit beginner
kits like the one in your pic that I got working properly from the ills
of cold solder joints, etc. Even people who got the electronics right
often had dials that scraped and jerked.
I built a LOT of Heathkits over many years, computers, Stereo, TVs test
equipment. Still have several that I use.
