What the wasabi reference doesn't point out is here

and most inside Japan is not the real thing. No, I'm not sure I've ever
eaten the real thing, although I may have in Japan back in 1960, but I
wouldn't know. It was my first experience of real Japanese food and I
ate a lot of stuff where I never knew what it was.
