There are dire warnings on a number of the CCD manufacturers sites about causing static damage to the sensors under the glass when you clean the surface. It may be that typically you ground yourself by touching the camera metal body parts when you hold the camera and thus, this is less likely than they make out. If the camera body is plastic try to hold something metal like a hotshoe while you do this. Rubbing the glass with an insulated pad may also induce significant voltages under very dry conditions. Maybe this is why used cameras get a lot of blown pixels sometimes? Possibly breathing on glass first might help.
