AFAIK, ICE works on an infrared image of the film, because 'chromogenic'
films (those which make the image out from dyes, instead of silver grains)
are transparent to IR light, but the dust etc is *not*, so the software is
aware of *where* the dust is.
All colour negative films and most slides (all except Kodachrome) are
chromogenic, thus suitable for ICE. This is true also of C41 processed B&W
films (Ilford XP2, etc). But both 'conventional' B&W films and the
Kodachromes make the image from silver grains (instead of dyes), which are
opaque to IR, thus rendering ICE useless.
