When carrying a camera skiing you also need to think about the damage it
might do to your body. Driving a camera through your rib cage is not good. I
used to carry the camera in a chest pack that had a hard-shell plastic piece
between the camera and me. I have not used that for years but it should be
around here someplace. It was adapted from a Patrollers radio pack. The
severity of crashes isn't very dependent upon the type of skis any more as
people are doing amazing stuff on free-heel skis. It's the speed and the
solidity of the things you collide with. Last month three people died skiing
at Teton Village. All three hit trees. The following week a guy died in an
avalanche in the back country. Right now the snow is very unstable from the
warm weather and the avalanche danger is high. I did a way-too-fast schuss
on nordic skis yesterday down a hill and through a grove of aspens that I
didn't think I would reach. Luckily there were no damaged trees. Today I did
about five miles through heavy snow with a pack. This old body is tired
tonight. I saw a Bobcat but could not get a picture. The bears are starting
to come out of hibernation so that is an added hazard as they are hungry and
ornery. /jmac

Are Alpine and Nordic talking at cross purposes here? I haven't done
much cross-country, but remember falls as rather gentle events.
