How close is 'very close'. The 35-70/4.0 (boy, I wish it was a 1.4 lens...!)
can only focus so close, if you're nearer than that you won't get it to
focus. I don't have one in front of me, but if its like the other 35-70
lenses the close focus limit is probably about 1-1/2 to 2 feet. Zooming
won't make any difference in the close focus limit, only changing what area
you cover at that closest distance.
If you're far enough away that the lens will focus to the distance, but you
still can't get it to, there could be a problem with the lens, the camera,
or your eyes... First I'd try it on a different body, and see if that makes
any difference. If so, it is a camera problem not a lens problem. If it is
the same with both bodies, then it might be in the lens, maybe it has been
dissassembled and put back together wrong, an element in backwards or
something.
The apparent image in the viewfinder of the OM's is at a 'virtual distance'
of about 3 feet or so, if your eyes have problems like 'farsightedness' so
you have problems focusing your plain eyesight to that distance then you
might have problems getting a good focus with an OM body, but that would
happen with all lenses. The fix here is to get contacts, glasses, or a
diopter insert for the viewfinder window (in an eyecup usually).
