I just reached in with the nail of my little finger and carefully lifted the
mirror to view my shutter curtain pattern. Mine, purchased new in mid-1979, is
the newer, more even pattern. By the way, I assume no liability if you poke
your finger through something delicate. . .
The story went that National Geographic photo department preferred the original
pattern enough to search out and buy up a stock of early model OM-2 bodies.

This is from the FAQ and has a link to a picture of the two different
shutter curtain patterns. I have my fathers first OM-2 here today and it has
the earlier first curtain in it. The method described by Chuck is the best
way to determine the curtain you have.
