Back in the early eighties I bought, on the advice of an engineering
colleague, a ZE-X Mamiya SLR. It has an extremely light body made I suspect
from glass-filled nylon mouldings. It doesn't look cheap and its electronic
system is still pretty avant garde. But apparently Mamiya got out of 35mm
probably because the lightness of the body, amongst other more financial
considerations, led people to believe it was cheap. There's still a few
around (well, there's a bloke in Denmark who has one so that makes two of us
:-) ) and the Mamiya-Sekor glass is rather nice, almost (I said almost) as
good as Zuiko. I'd be confident that it would still work even after a drop
on concrete (well, tough carpet, anyway).

To be fair, it felt solid and well made to me, but I quickly looked
around to see whether anyone would see me holding the garish, cheap
looking thing. :-)
