I'll endorse "Captain Hook's" idea. On vacation a friend of mine was worried
about leaving her video camera on a tippy, affordable
(ahem) tripod. She wanted to do unattended, long form video capture. She
GREATLY appreciated it when I added about 8 pounds of
dead weight underneath her center column. Suddenly the center of mass shifted
from the video camera (more than a metre above the
floor), to a point much lower than that.

I put a gym bag (containing a spare tripod as ballast) on the hook she already
had. The straps of the gym bag let the weight sit
close to the ground, making the tripod self-righting (to an extent). In an
environment where there was a mix of alcohol, darkness,
and expensive equipment on a spindly, affordable (ahem again) tripod, it made a
world of difference.

"I cannot change the laws of physics, Captain!"
