I agree. As I have said before a film camera gets an "upgrade" every
time a new film comes out. Very cool. Some progress has been made with
firmware upgrades on existing cameras, but a modular sensor unit would
very nice. It might be possible, though difficult. However there is no
longer an incentive for that. I think the business model has changed.
Film cameras were like razors that made money on the blades --low
profit cameras and high profit lenses. I think they are definitely
making big profits on the cameras now and why extend the life of an
existing model when you can get someone to trade up to a new model?
Modular should be available soon with the Leica R8 digital back and
there are lots of rumors flying around about a modular Nikon F6. And of
course modular digital additions are already available for medium
format at stratospheric prices.
