In Oz this would have voided the election and required a general
revote - no argument - as soon as it hit the appropriate court. It's
happened and it shifted the result of a close state election, causing
a change of government (27 soldiers overseas demonstrated that they
had been inadvertently disenfranchised in a marginal seat in a tight
election).
Regardless of loyalties, the only way to avoid this whole mess is to
place the conduct of federal elections under the power of an
independent federal body (an Electoral Commission) with a clear set
of rules. The world's leading democracy (in some senses) should also
demonstrate the best and fairest procedures.

Actually, that's not true. Of course it has to be the explanation, or there
would be no moving on.
Just the point of many senior citizens whose communities were surprised that
Pat Robertson held most of their votes (and they'd never vote for him to save
their lives) is enough to put reasonable doubt into it. That, along with this:

is just a start on why its not just politics.
