I'm sure you are aware that using an extension tube on a zoom means
that focus changes as you zoom, like the Vivitar variofocus lens. Since
the 35-105 is a one touch zoom (or any zoom really) that can have zoom
creep, your focus can change.
I have zooms that creep (even one that leaps and a 2-touch that
creeps!), but my Zuiko 35-105 is actually a bit stiff and certainly
doesn't creep at all.
Add to that, many macro shots are fairly long exposures (for good dof), so
keeping it all fixed, no zoom creep, becomes a challenge with the extension
tube. I forget though, doesn't the 35-105 have a way to lock into close focus?
It has a close focus mode which is actually a built in exension tube,
push the button and twist and it simply moves the whole optical part of
the lens forward. The result, as you note above, is a vario focus
effect. More annoying though is that the extension is most effective at
35mm, since the fixed amount of extension is a much greater 0ncrease
to 35 than to 105mm. Thus, at normal closest focus the greatest
magnification is at the longest fl, but with the close focus ring
engaged it is at the widest setting, with the least working distance.
If so, extension may work just fine, except for light loss compared to a
diopter. A diopter macro attachment is definitely easier to use with most zooms.
