Didn't movie camera operators in the days of the silents always have their
baseball caps on backwards? I remember when in the early forties in boarding
school when we had silent 16mm shows we sometimes saw cameramen thus
attired.

It has been around forever. As a child watching old black and white movies
on the tube with the Gas House Gang the tall guy wore his baseball cap
backwards. And it was a baseball cap not a farmer's cap with the name of a
feed store on it.
