Well, for whatever reasons they have in farming out there work, it sucks
to have them scattered over the globe with no real main source that's
readily available to the public.

Reread please - that's not what was said. Japan first outsourced
manufacture to Korea and Taiwan - neither now 3rd world economies in
the 'developing' sense but they were. Later they used China. Pentax
shifted manufacture of the K1000 from Japan to China in the late
1980's, for example. A lot of electronic componenets were and are
made in Malaysia.
