Ya know, all of these guys are right.  I hereby withdraw the idea of drilling.  
Besides the reasons already mentioned, you'd
probably pierce the battery!  Rubber stoppers or adhesives sound much smarter.  
I've looked at battery cover problems from both
sides now...
