Jim,
I haven't had a 1-8 in a long time, so I can't help you there. I
do have two, maybe three, 1-7's, and I don't need but one, if
anybody's interested.
I think you'll like the geared head. It's no good for following
something moving, but for zeroing in on and holding EXACTLY the
framing you want, it's the cat's pajamas. Besides, I have found
that most long-lens and macro photography is based on anticipating
where the shot will be -- like the limb on the big, dead oak tree
where the pair of red-shouldered hawks that nest in the woods
behind our house always perch and eat whatever they've caught for
breakfast.
