Well, really at the short end. As you say, one slips into macro mode at 
60mm, not 300mm and working distance is pretty short at close macro, as 
you also mention. On the other hand, the 1.9m regular close focus at 
300mm (almost twice as close as the 3.5m of the 300/4.5) is really quite 
useful for modest close-ups with great working distance.
