Well...a Canon 600 f 4 with IS is $7199! Yes, it's IS - but it's also a
full stop slower.
Let's get this straight: a 300mm will always be a 300mm. The field of view
will be comparable to that of a 600mm on a fullframe sensor, but it's still
a 300mm lens.
If we're talking DoF in the end product (a print) the 300/2.8 will behave
like a 600/5.6, NOT like a 600/2.8
If we're talking speed a 300/2.8 on "half frame" will be faster than a
600/4 for the same ISO, but a fullframe sensor would have larger pixels,
allowing for less noise/higher ISO. In fact I believe a fullframe with a
*600/5.6*would get comparable results to a 300/2.8 on half frame. The 600/4
on fullframe would be no contest.
There simply is no substitute for aperture when it comes to light gathering
power and small DoF! The 600/4 has at least a 150mm diameter lens element,
the 300/2.8 slightly more than 100mm. I know which one sounds like the
better deal to me, but I probably wouldn't want to carry it.
