Boris.. I've NEVER had a problem admitting that I'm a gear head... I've
been a programmer for 11 years!! Actually, I'm an efficiency freak. I
want to maximize what I can get from the most minimized system (how did
you think I ended up with an OM??)
As far as digital; I have worked with 1100 webservers before (For
Boeing) and trust me when I say, archiving digital stuff is a headache
the size of a 747.. Most of my 3 year old CD's are not readable..
jpg's are not the standard anymore... jpg2000 is suppose to be, but
it's a rough road... TIFF (version 6) which we currently use, is going
to be replaced by TIFF (version 7).. What about proprietary RAW
formats? One of my students can't find a battery for her old sony
digital cameras anymore.. Issues like that are of great concern. If
there are vacation places that I can only go to ONCE in my life, I'd
probably trust it more to film right now..
I had digital copies only, of my penpals from Germany, England etc..
then I got a virus and it wiped out all my jpgs. No problem, went to
the CD's... error reading CD's. So I don't have pictures of any of my
penpals anymore.. Asked them to send me new ones, all they had were
newer pics of themselves, the digital ones they had somehow ended up
getting deleted without being archived..
So it's not just scare tactics, it's happened to me before, and so I'm
weary of it..
But.. that has also taught me a lesson.. archival is to be tested and
not to be trusted...

Albert,
I think (do not take this the wrong way) that you are more of a gearhead, than
yod like to admit...:) and nothing wrong with this either. I think yo are more
interested in what the gear can do for you, I might be wrong, in your
photographs you seem to value how much detail the camera was able to
capture...etc. you know what I mean...
My advice is to sit back again (after reading all this posts) and think what you want as a final result, I really want to underline that final...If you still think that you are mostly interested in how big that slide image is, fine buy that MF even better, the prices are falling down, so you can go even larger at a reasonable price, but IMHO you will not find a system as versatile as the 35mm and at this point you should use it from the beginning to the end, meaning also printing.
This list has its moods and if curious, ask the same question a couple of months later and see what answers you would get...under its influence I went into MF at one point and regret it, but keep the camera, because it is such fun to use it and do not want to loose money, but I am also a guy who notices the composition first, all the other parameters can be adjusted later in the process...to some degree.
But if you asked MF or digital, I would tell you the latter. I think that most
of the list members unfairly put down digital and the storage concerns are
unreasonable, but this is what I think and for those of you with their hair up
their butts (it seems that lately this have been happening more than ever...) I
write the following disclaimer:
I am not interested in continuing this discussion neither on nor off list (was
this gramatically correct?) and please, write to it when your mood is better.
Thank you for reading
