I think the "non significant" is also related to your workflow, you scan and
print them, right?
Actually, I only print a few that I particularly like at larger sizes
and sometimes 4x6s for others. I use the computer for casual viewing,
like flipping through a stack of 4x6s except bigger, brighter.and not
subject to huge variation depending on viewing light. Almost all are 8
bit, so I could be missing come color subtlety, but I haven't seen any
difference with a 16bit scan.
Contrast is also very important for negative and one hour
lab, in my experience a medium contrast lens is needed for good result.
I use a 1-day lab noted for quality, haven't used 1 hour in years, so I
know nothing about them these days. I'm just not interested in stacks of
4x6 prints. Sanpshots at a family gathering, sure, get double prints and
hand them around, otherwise no.
My friend who use C*non and 100egative also found the same, he like his
lower contrast Angenius 28-70 and C*non 24-85 more then the high contrast
28-135 IS.
Film matters too, and Portra NC is one of my favorites, low contrast and
huge latitude. I just got back my first roll of 400VC, but don't have an
opinion yet.
