Skip,
No argument here. My point being that for some folks, (myself included)
battery power is indeed an issue. That it is easier to carry more film
than it is to carry more of the large batteries needed by some digital
cameras. And that the battery argument, is more than a nonsenisical or
trivial issue., it is a valid concern in some cases and well worth
considering prior to buying a digital camera.
One thing that I did not add, is that you can (at this point in time)
find some kind of film most places you travel, but not always the
correct battery for your digital camera.
For a lot of my shooting it is unlikely that a digital camera will
replace my film cameras, but if a digital were to be able to do that, it
will have to address the bvattery consumption issue.

Jim,
All valid points, but 990f users aren't away from power for more than a few
hours, let alone 10 days. And one set of spare batteries to cover those few
hours isn't much of a hassle or weight penalty. Many digital cameras are
indeed battery hogs. But my Canon G2 will live for a couple of days on one
lithium, rechargable battery and the other one only weighs a few ounces.
For those away from power for extended periods (with no need to remotely send
images somewhere else), no digital beats a film-based P&S or mechanical camera
+ a couple of extra batteries.

I repectfully disagree. One of the real problems with digicams that I
have seen is the rapid battery consumption. When you are cycling or
backpacking for ten days you are often not able to recharge batteries,
and the weight and bulk and cost of spare batteries for many of the DCs
out there far exceed that of film!

First off - I am a film guy; 95 percent of my shooting is with film. But
the battery thing is really nonsensical - after all, you have to
remember to carry film, right? So take along spare batteries; big deal.
And I have to say that the more I use/play with digital, the more I like
it. I still love b&w film, but the advantages of digital grow more and
more obvious. Also, don't think of the E-1 as a stray, Kathy, any more
than the OM system was a stray - think of it instead as a pure-bred that
has not caught on and been overbred into drooling idiocy, like the
Golden Retriever or Toy Poodle.;-)

My husband and I have been considering digital cameras for a few years.
We would need to upgrade our computer and printer in order to do any
decent printing.
I'm a die-hard film person. The first time I developed a b & w neg. in
my bathroom, it took my breath away. It was magic. I suppose that
means I'm old-fashioned.
I like that I can take photos with an OM-1 with no battery (i.e in
extreme cold). I'm not even comfortable with auto-focus (I have a
Can*n EOS as well as my OMs). I'm always using the lenses on "manual".
Having said all that, I'm pretty sure we'll be getting a DSLR in 18
months or so. Probably Can*n unless the E-1 knocks the socks off my
husband. I don't even want to see an E-1 for fear that it will beg me
to take it home. I'm a sucker for strays. KathyD
