Hi all,

>Your/this server was up now

Yes, it's my own computer acting as a web server... It's always turned on,
but maybe it was just too busy downloading other things, or playing Quake
III ;-)

I have experienced some DNS problems, maybe it's related.

M31 is one of the easiest objects -- some people are able to see it with
the naked eye!

Most 'deep-sky' objects are quite faint, but relatively large, so there's
no need for longer lenses. A piggybacked 135mm can register *a lot* of
things in the sky... For those with knowledge on Astronomy, I managed to
make a slide of M51 *and* its tiny companion NGC 5195... with a 135/2.8!!!

>Do you remember the technical details?

Camera: Olympus OM-2n
Lens: Zuiko 300mm F4.5
Exposure: 10 minutes @ f/4.5
Film: Ilford Delta 3200
Developer: Kodak HC-110 (most likely dil. A)

The camera was on 'B', and the exposure determined on previous experience.
The time was rather long beacuse:

1. The relatively high reciprocity failure of the film.
2. The dark sky available at the location (Calar Alto Astronomic Observatory)

I like Sensia 400 (pushed to 1600) for astropics. This film has nearly-zero
reciprocity failure, so I expose it for 2 minutes at f/4 -- in not-so-dark
skies, though.

>I would like to try this with my 600mm setup.

Long lenses need an *absolutely accurate* tracking... not that easy! The
Zuiko 200/4 is surprisingly good for piggyback astropics: maybe the best
balance magnification / tracking ease.

The simplest setup for tracked astrophotography doesn't need a telescope:
try a search for 'barn door tracker' and you could find how to build one of
these devices. There are highly sophisticated versions, like the one from
this guy <http://www.jlc.net/~force5/Astro/ATM/Barndoor/barndoor.html>
which, BTW, is using *the right* camera ;-)

However, I don't recommend such kind of devices with a 600mm lens... but
you can do a lot with a 135!

Enjoy,
