Brian,
even if the label is dead centre and doesn't cause the CD player
to explode or just burn out its bearings, labels should be avoided. Some
have glues which, being high in plasticisers to keep them sticky in the
first place, leech into the lacquer top layer of the disk and attack the
reflective layer. Even those which don't have such glues expand at
different rates from the CD over temperature, which eventually causes
micro fractures in the reflective layer.

All of my CDs, even the original green-gold type, recorded up to 8 years
ago are still readable. I have never used labels or written on the
recording area - only on the hub. Colleagues have some CDs which have
ceased to be readable after only a year or two and I am sure it is
because they put pretty labels on them. Most of the longevity issues of
CDs are down to abuse and mishandling, including use of labels, rather
than the quality of the recording media.
