"By and large" was originally a nautical expression (still is I suppose, 
aarrg).  Had to do with wind conditions and sail 
adjustments.  Unfortunately I don't know a darn thing about sailing.  Made 
studying Joseph Conrad, otherwise very engaging, quite painful.
