I'd really like to know what sort of soap you used. Ordinary hand soap
should not damage an OM focusing screen. It sounds as if there were a
chemical reaction with the soap.
I don't know if the screens are polystyrene. But polystyrene -- the same
plastic used for CD jewel cases -- is readily attacked by orange oil and
similar solvents.
I clean my screens with Dawn. You simply wet the screen and rub the liquid
over it with your fingers. I've never had a problem. After thoroughly
rinsing the screen, hit it with canned air to blow away the water.
