Yes, they are LCD's in the true sense of the word. The main difference
is that a typical LCD (such as that found in the MD2) is viewed using reflected
light provided by a backing material. The LCD's in the viewfinders are viewed
using transmitted light which is usually guided by a light pipe (a fancy word
for a piece of plastic :-). A translucent material is attached to the LCD to
provide the contrast needed to see the information. Olympus produced two
versions of the LCD display for the OM-3/4. The newer version has a blue mask
applied to it to make it easier to read the information.
