I have the following questions:
1. Why was the brown case called a "hard" case when it is much softer than
the semi-hard case.
It's not the same as the older, lighter brown "hard" case made from what
appears to be saddle leather (I have a couple).
2. What is under the 1.4 label on the box .. if you know? Each side is
identical with the exact same label. It appears to be a factory modification.
My guess is nothing . . . but perhaps there might be a "1.2" under it. If
you look at the bottom of the nose in the area of the flap that goes around
the bottom half, you should see a "1.4" stamped into the leather. This is
the size of "standard lens" the nose fits. IOW, it's made for the length
and diameter of a 50/1.4 lens . . . should fit with the OM 50/1.4 lens hood
reversed too. I have a couple of these dark brown cases, plus one with
"1.2" marked on it that fits the slightly larger 50/1.2 standard lens. Its
nose piece is slightly larger, but not by much. Olympus made several
different noses for these cases including longer ones for zooms and the
moderate telephoto lenses.
3. Value of above??
Whatever someone is willing to pay, if anything; eB*y is
unpredictable. Ensure it's real leather. Olympus made some in a similar
color that are leatherette . . . I've seen a couple and they have a
shinier surface texture . . . the leatherette ones do not hold up very well
before the surface of them begins flaking off. The real leather ones hold
up quite well. The most durable are the light brown "hard" cases . . . but
getting the nose on one to fit on an OM-2S/OM-3[ti]/OM-4[T] . . . over the
prism and hot shoe . . . can be nearly impossible.
