Isn't Beryllium particularly toxic ?
...Wayne
Yes, very, but only to a rather small group of people. About 1-60f
the population is able to become sensitized to beryllium, and about 2%
of people exposed will develop chronic beryllium disease, which is much
like asbestosis or black lung disease. Unfortunately, there is no way
to determine who can potentially become sensitized to beryllium until
they actually do, so anywhere there is beryllium it is assumed that
everyone will become sensitized to it. It is currently believed that
airborne beryllium dust is the most hazardous, but there is some
evidence that it can enter through the skin as well.
This is already probably more than most of you want to know, but I had
to sit through a 3 hour training class on beryllium health hazards :)
