Just returned from a little vacation in which my principal camera was
my new Koolpox 5700. Had an OM1 and a few rolls of film for a fail safe
back up for the wetness expected in Costa Rica. It turned to not be so
wet when we were there - just one short but biblically awesome downpour
in an area of the country where it is not supposed to rain. It was a
wonderful trip and highly recommended.
The camera is my first serious attempt at digital. I was pleasantly
surprised. It was relatively easy to manage considered my old manual
brain and its small memory buffer. The controls for the functions most
wanted are accessible without resorting to a menu, except for the spot
meter. The low light focus was better than stated in most of the
reviews. I guess all these people expect to focus in the dark with
lasers. For those used to an Oly OM, the slowness of execution made it
difficult for decisive moment shots. All in all it was a wonder of ease
of use and flexibility compared to that Sony I tried first. I think it
really pays to get one of these little gizmos made by a camera
manufacturer, like Oly, N*, or C* who understands the ergonomics of
still photography, not by a computer/electronics company. The
electronic viewfinder takes some getting used to. It is possible to
manually focus with it using extreme sharpening applied to the plane of
focus. It is weird, but works after a fashion, but the autofocus worked
well for me.
It has a nice little feature for handheld macro and telephoto. It is
call Best Shot Selector. It allows you to hold down the shutter release
and get up to 10 shots(hoping for a steady one) which then get analyzed
and the sharpest one is saved to the memory card. However it does NOT
work for wild life when the sharpest pic is usually when they have left
the frame! :-)
I am working my way through the images. The ones where I did not try to
shoot at 280mm(equiv) extension at a 1/4 of second look pretty good. :-)
