Well, I live quite a long way from Oxford, England. The usage I was
meaning is better expressed on the site that Piers referred to:
"Curmudgeon: An ill-tempered person full of resentment and stubborn
notions." or the Quick definition from onelook.com: "curmudgeon,
noun: a crusty irascible cantankerous old person full of stubborn ideas"
When I was much younger, I sort of secretly looked forward to being a
curmudgeon in my old age. Fortunately, it appears I'll never make it to
curmudgeonhood. I think the best I can hope for is to achive reasonable
success as a moderate eccentric.
Of course, we mostly only know the on-line personalities of our fellow
listees, but from his posts, it appears Walt has made impressive strides
toward achieving curmudgeonhood, although he sometimes strays a bit
toward loveable curmudgeon (Sorry Walt, gotta call 'em as I sees 'em,
and your heart betrays you at times ;-) .

According to the O.E.D a curmudgeon is (this is taken from a quote):
'An avaricious churlish fellow; a miser, a niggard.'
