Under the right circumstances, the effect can be substantial. Try aiming
Southeast, using right eye to view, with afternoon sun pouring into the
gap between eye/glasses and viewfinder, then hold your hand up to block
the sun. At least a stop is easily possible.

How is it possible that the exposure would be thrown off by the viewfinder? You
meter/ set exposure with you eye to the cup(blocking partially or ompletely
the light with your face). Since the exposure is mechanical, it doesn't change
through the exposure. At most, I would think that light leakage from the
viewfinder would be only a 1/4 or 1/2 stop off.
