Here's a repost of part of a thread on small, easy to pack/carry tripods
from Jan. Others also had good things to say about the 343. When I tried
it out in a camera store, it was clearly superior to anything else they
had anywhere near the same size and weight. Hang a weight from it (Jan.
posts on that too.) and/or use Oly's recommended technique: "Also, to
prevent camera shake:
When using a tripod, hold the camera steady with both hands and press
the shutter release with the ball of finger, not with the cable
release." When set up without the center column extended and without the
last, thinnest leg extension, it is about the same height as a little
Gitzo and about as sturdy/stable. When set up so I don't have to be on
my knees to use it, it is still quite useable.

I agree on the Velbon 343e. A really good tripod, no, but amazingly good
for a small, light tripod. In addition to being 'better than no tripod'
it's better than a tripod that's not set up yet, as it is very quick and
easy to set up and take down. I've been thinking about getting a velcro
strap to hold the legs together at the bottom when extended and trying
it as a hicking stick. It's light enough, but not comfortable to grip
at/near the top. Maybe a handle that screws on in place of the ball
head, which can be carried easily in a pocket. Humm.........

I don't offer one however will allow that I have just purchased a
Velbon Maxi 343e with the intent of strapping it to my camera case and
sliding it under an airplane seat. Don't expect it to hold an OM and
a 400mm Tamron, however for a relatively light travel kit, it should
be just the ticket. Metal construction, ball head, under 2 pounds , 18
1/2 inches folded and under $100. Bill Barber

Another question is... should I bring the tripod (Manfrotto 190 with
small magnesium head)? Hauling it around in India will be a pain...
Maybe I can keep it in the big backpack (where my clothes etc. are),
leave it at the hotel, carry it only when I think it will be used.
