I have a Tokina 90mm macro, and I use it a lot for portrait work, as I
think it has great Bokeh..
My friend however says that macro lenses used as portrait lenses aren't
that great; BS or true?
Dear Albert, I think you already answered your question:

My gf just complained that you can see all the zits on her face; same
complaint I got from my cousins...
My 90mm + Reala is a bit too sharp for portraits (judging by the
complaints from others) but hey, that's what we strive for,
sharpness... Time for photoshop.
Perhaps your friend just prefers to use a flattering lens to begin with
and skip the time fixing the image in photoshop?
Some of use strive for sharpness as a goal, some strive for the mix of
photographic qualities, of which sharpness is one, that creates the
image we want. Tastes vary.
There are also softening filters for portraiture, both hardware and
software. You might want to check out.Fred Miranda's Digital Soft Focus
<http://www.fredmiranda.com/SF_action/index.html>. It might save you a
lot of time in Photoshop for only $8.50. If the gf likes the results,
you are home free.
