You could do it the old fashioned way, in the days of focal plane flash
bulbs. Put a handkerchief over it. Single thickness for one step.
Double thickness for 2 steps. You could get fancy and have someone sew
you a little pillow case for the flash with a single layer one side and
double on the other which you could rotate. You would have to
experiment to see what distance worked the best with the cover.
Certainly the plastic wide angle lens would give you a drop in the
light too.
