I've worn toric lenses for years and never had such problems. Mine have
always served me perfect no matter which direction my head was facing :)
Maybe you had a bad brand? Then again maybe I'm just used to it...

I have a *very* slight astigmatism, and I tried a pair out once a while back. They drove me nuts, as you can feel them rotate. Plus, if you tip your head off to one side or the other, they rotate to the *wrong* position and screw up your vision.
