Well, I summoned up the courage to take the top off my OM1 yesterday to look at
the film counter return problem.
.... and really there was no problem at all, other than the counter dial was a
bit sticky. I just wound it back and forward with my finger a few times,
reseated the large circlip that holds it in place and it worked perfectly.
The only complication was that after putting it all back together I found the
compression spring for the rear cover catch rolling across the desk.... woops!
still can't work out how it escaped without me seeing it, but it gave me some
extra practice of getting the top off.
Of course I didn't have anything like the proper tools for unscrewing things,
so I'm indebted to you all for the tips, especially Chuck Norcutt who sent me a
amalgam of what appeared to be every post related to the subject. My best bit
of improvisation being to use the rubber foot of my monopod to unscrew the
rewind level trim.
I'm now tempted to find something to spend the money on that I saved by not
having this job done professionally, but I think my CFO might have an opinion
on that.
