Tough choice. I don't suppose telecommuting is an option? I did a lot of
that the last couple of years I was working. The commute is a lot more
bearable when it's only 5-7 times a month.
You could always try out the job and find a nice face-saving reason to
leave after it bridges you over the tough season. "Sorry Bob, I really
appreciate you helping me get this job and I understand the salary
limitations. I thought I could make it, but I find I just can't support
the family on this salary in this area, so I have to move to a lower
cost area." Getting back in the game also gives other, better,
opportunities the chance to show up.
On the other hand, maybe photography is your real calling, and you have
to give it a full shot at providing a living. Only you can know, and you
have to look inside for that answer, not outside. What really calls to
you may be more important than salary now vs. salary then. Letting pride
rather than heart make such an important decisison can be foolish.
By the way, where do you exhibit in the East Bay? Might be fun to run
into you if you take that course.
Good luck with your decision.

Even I am shocked at how many folks are posting their layoff stories.
Me too. I sure wish all of you the best, and especially regarding
employment, over the coming year. I've been extremely lucky over my
career. Every time my company went through upheaval and layoffs, I was
working on something necessary to the LBO, restructuring, whatnot, so I
always survived. Hearing all your stories makes me feel better about all
the money I spent keeping my older son and his family above water when
he was laid off twice in the last year or so. Fortunately, he is in a
pretty secure position now.
Now retired with an overfunded (as a result of the prior layoffs!)
pension plan paying my modest but sufficient pension, I hope some of my
good luck rubs off on all you good folks.
