Yeah, I've always wondered about "church key" references, too. First time
I heard the phrase was from an American -- until then, I'd always known
them as "bottle openers" or "can punches." Of course, the two-sided ones
(typically made by the Handy Corp. of New York state), with a bottle opener
on one side and a can punch on the other, is one of the great simple tools
of the modern Western kitchen, and totally dependent on advances in food
technology (without bottles or cans of liquid, the tool wouldn't exist).
