I have the both Coolpix 990 and 4500. I also have the Sony DSC-707.
The standard autofocus of both the Coolpix units is OK .. nothing to have an
orgasm over. On the other hand, the Coolpix macro capability with autofocus
is spectacular. I use the Coolpix mainly for macro work (probably the best
digital macro units around). They are also great for photo-microscopy.
If you are really interested in an awesome autofocus unit with a great lens
take a look at the Sony DSC-707 or its replacement, the 717. Truly amazing
.. even in total darkness!
I have both wide angle and telephoto accessory lenses for the 707 .. both
are Olympus.
