I came across a mention of the Tamron 90mm family in a previous OM-thread:
"there are two versions of the tamron 90/2.5 macro. one has
49mm filter threads, the other has 55mm filter threads. the tamron
90/2.8 macro has 55mm filter threads. the two 90/2.5's are the
same optics in a different package, although the BBAR coating
Tamron uses was updated from the 49mm one to the 55mm one.
all are multicoated. the 49mm filter thread version is the
most rugged of the three (in fact, it is as close to indesctructible
as I've ever seen a camera lens, including the original Vivitar Series 1
lenses that had uncompromising build quality). the 90/2.8 one
has an all-plastic barrel and helicoid.

I've just spotted a mint Tamron90 f2.5 sp + 1:1 tube just in my budget. How
do I tell which model it is and, of course, which is the best model to go
for.
thanks
Ian
