Thanks. So if I manually depress the DOF level w/ the lens unattached and
the aperture appears to move w/o trouble, then it is probably OK? This is
on the 85/2 that just arrived. Normally I make sure to ask whether a lens
has oil on aperture blades, but this was a last minute impulse bid (bad bad
bad...) so I didn't have a chance. Looks to be in very good shape otherwise
though. My 2nd silvernose.... Anycase, will give it a workout this weekend.

If it affects aperture operation (most commonly slow or only partial
reopening), yes, exposures will be incorrect if taken before aperture has
fully reopened. If there is no effect on aperture operation, it may be
some time, if ever, before it has any effect on picture taking. If it's a
lens that 'must' always be available, it needs service because it's
impossible to predict when it will affect operation. Unless a film of oil
starts to show up on a lens element, nothing is being damaged by putting
off a cleaning until performance is affected.

Is that something that needs to be fixed ASAP?
