Here's my guess (again, it's a guess) but there are 6 directions you can
move. X,Y,Z, rotate X, rotate Y, rotate Z. Most ballheads allow for
rotation about the X,Y,and Z, with some limited movement in the X and Y
direction. The offset will allow for some movement in the Z axis I
suspect, but am not too sure because I don't know what the Gitzo offset
ballhead looks like. Most Z direction movement is done by moving the
tripod height. The offset seems to allow for easy transition to a
protrait orientation, as there is nothing directly below you.

I've always wondered -- what's the advantage of the offset here? Obviously
it changes the handling somehow, but what's the change supposed to improve?
