Well, it all depends ...
One of the charms of my E-20 is that it can function as an AF wonder, or I
can take complete control of Shutter, Aperture, and focus manually. I can
decide what color temperature I want. I can decide to use full or retarded
flash. I can bracket. I can control when the flash fires, doesn't fire,
etc.
I would like a greater selection of film speeds and so on. But then, the
three that are available suit my needs very well. I can successfully hand
hold the camera in most situations and if I goof I can edit in the field and
try again. I can make 11 x 14 prints that are beautiful and rival those
from available pro shops that print from negatives.
I am not denigrating film cameras, and certainly not the OM system that we
all love. The E-20 experience is "different". It is liberating for me! I
am not concerned with "looking the part". I just go out and do it! I am
every bit as much in control of the digital camera (if I choose to be) as I
am of my OM-1 or OM-2. I am in control from start to finish in a
photographic endeavor.
I held out until the E-20 came so that I could get past the limitations of
the P&S digitals. I agree that control is needed to do serious photography.
I am still learning to use the E-20, but I have to say that it is a joy to
do so, and the results are pretty darn nice!
I respect the opinions of those who have spoken to this subject! Several of
you are way ahead of me in your experience in film based photography. But I
do feel that the "difference" justifys my pursuit of excellence with the
E-20.
Ducking for cover, I am,
Dave Dougherty
