I'm not an expert, but I doubt it. It's a Stearman, which was used as a
trainer by the USN when the U.S. entered WWII.
They were noted for being very forgiving and nearly indestructible,
particularly in a full power dive which would normally rip the wings off of
a biplane.
I believe the pilot depicted in this one was trying to sort out which way
is "up" on the map . . . apparently he figured it out as he eventually got
it into the air a little while later.
