I've never read a story
concerning quantities of washing machines or other applicances
being destroyed.

Or to state it from a different point of view, customers who
wish to buy the latest technology will do so. However, to
alienate existing customers is contrary to long-term corporate
survival.

Sorry you have not heard about it. Computers are a case in point.
Several years ago Apple plowed thousands of computers into the
ground. Now surplus computers of all brands are exported to be
dismantled and disposed of overseas to save the environment, just
our environment I think. Unsold models are still destroyed though.
I think that corporations are reluctant to alienate small percentages
of their existing customers is idealistic, but not true. Sorry. But
corporations cannot please everyone and all they care is that there
are more customers that are pleased than not and that new customers
are happier, more numerous and less demanding than old ones. They
make these choices all the time. Only the bottom line matters.
