I wrote to Mike Johnston just after I read the
50mm lens article on luminous-landscape.com. He spoke
very highly of the 50/2 but not so well about the 50/1.8
Here's my mail to him and his reply.

Tim,
Yeah, I thought of that after what I wrote about the
lens...the Nikkor
50/1.8 is the same way, there are actually about X
different versions and
there are some slight observable differences.
I can¹t tell you which version I used for that
picture...I¹ve had several
over the years and they¹re all de-accessioned now.
It¹s not a bad lens by any means, though.
